The Matthew Gray Post #93, Ida Grove, Iowa

The Matthew Gray Post #93 of the Grand Army of the Republic was established in the fall of 1881 with 27 charter members. Its membership eventually grew to 127. The post remained active until the death of its last member, James Deal, in 1930. It was named in honor of Matthew Gray, a respected soldier who had passed away shortly before the post was founded.

For many years, the Matthew Gray Post was highly active, showing great enthusiasm for Decoration Day and the Fourth of July. On these occasions, Civil War veterans would don their blue uniforms, with one carrying a large flag and the others bearing rifles, leading the parade. “Kim” Page, a tall, well-dressed man with a long beard, typically served as the officer of the day. He would ride a horse and, with ceremonial precision, lead his men to their meetings. Sometimes they marched to the cemetery; however, as time went on, they used carriages, lined up at the cemetery, and fired salutes over each comrade’s grave.

Richard Williams and James Deal were the last veterans to answer the final roll call. Richard Williams, from Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, enlisted in 1864 and served with Battery F, 1st Illinois Light Artillery. He passed away on April 21, 1929, at the age of 83.

James Deal, who enlisted in Boone, Iowa, in March 1862, served with Company K, Iowa Infantry. He received an honorable discharge at Jefferson Barracks in 1863 after being severely injured in the Battle of Luka, Mississippi. He died on March 12, 1930, at the age of 87.
